What is Social Networking and is there a realistic danger? Structurally, social networking websites resemble a modern day cross between a yearbook and a small town salon or barber shop. Facebook is an example of a social networking website site where individuals create digital profiles and link to others ("friends") within the network -- similar to having conversations in person without having to exchange dialogue. Social networking websites allow users to restrict who can see their page and contact them; however most users opt to make their profiles public or fail to fully understand privacy settings to ensure safety. The primary concern is that this openness puts users at risk, making them particularly vulnerable to predators. Currently, we are seeing a subculture of teens and adults who have developed different notions of privacy. Youth feel relatively comfortable sharing aspects of their lives on-line and in certain cases in person with those who connect through the site; teens do not fully understand the risks of making certain information public. Social networking websites are actively providing participants outlets for communication and advertisement of personal information.By giving youth access to an on-line audience of their peers, social networking websites provide a fertile ground for identity development and cultural exposure. Youth view social media as a place where they can be who they are, joke around with friends and make certain to stay in the loop about everything that is going on around them. The consequences to this behaviour when un-monitored or addressed by parents can be detrimental to their professional futures. Do social networking skills fit into adult culture? Youth in an information based society play with information and social networks and we are seeing an increase in youth who interact vocally over the Internet through on-line gaming (Xbox and Playstation). Over the past decade, adults have been learning how to interact across multiple communities and negotiate with diverse cultures and time zones. Social networking services are being deployed as professional tools, extending the sets of contacts that people can tap in their work lives. It is not surprising that such tools are also part of the social lives of our teens and should be utilized as a teaching tool to allow youth to grow with emerging powers in information technology.Should I be open to learning more? Having an open and positive approach to technology and social networking will include sites like Facebook. Understanding the science behind this phenomenon, reviewing and communicating behaviours like the look-at-me mentality on social networking websites and addressing our own internal voyeuristic tendencies will only solidify our understanding of youth, adults, and the Internet and how we all will benefit from the technologies we, as a society, use. Discovering the balance between private and professional lives, appropriate photos and personal photos, how and where we use digital technology, and how we place this technology into the hands of youth will be our positive shift in the introduction and education of 21st century ingenuity.
Has social networking changed the nature of play? What teens are doing on-line is no better and no worse than what previous generations of teens did when their parents weren't looking.The major difference is that the activities of today’s youth are being chronologically digitized through Facebook and in turn also being brought into public view. Parents are experiencing this as a loss of control and the evidence of student activity shows us that parents may not fully understand the capabilities of the social networking tools available to their children. Contradicting the need for safe homes and safe children, the tools parents provide to their children are enabling this loss of control. One of the biggest risks of these digital technologies is not the idea of teens escaping parent based control but rather the permanent traces left behind of their conduct on the Internet. While integrating into cultural life is critical during these years the actual process is not always smooth or pleasant. Bullying, sexual teasing and other peer-to-peer harassment appear to be rampant among teenagers. Facebook did not create teenage bullying or Internet luring but it has made it more visible to many adults. This visibility can provide a window through which teen and parent participants can help combat the multiplicity of issues currently on-line.

Mediated Reality is the third stage in a social media awareness project from Miller Consulting Services originating from www.howsafe.ca Based out of the development and presentation of How Safe awareness programs to students and teachers in British Columbia.How Safe became the stepping stone to launch a number of consultation based projects dedicated to social media awareness and how to better educate users of multimedia, the Internet, mobile technology and social networks. The core values behind How Safe demonstrated to audiences a value behind on-line profiles and an ability to equate the actions that occur on-line to reality and how to create smarter approaches to connectivity. Over a two year period, over fifty thousand students, parents and educators in the province of British Columbia received education through the How Safe social media awareness program.

CONNECT ABOUT THE FOUNDER OF MEDIATED REALITYJesse Miller is a national speaker who has addressed thousands of participants presenting and consulting to schools and companies across Canada since 2007. Jesse is in high demand as a keynote speaker on the topics of social media awareness, social networking behaviour and online content evaluation driving the majority of his business from social media awareness based presentations to schools and non-profit groups who seek to facilitate change for youth online.
